Historically, the biggest change in filmmaking was the introduction of sound. The special requirements of sound altered the filmmaking process. Digital filmmaking is the equivalent to the introduction of sound. I think we are going to have the freedom of opening up sound, visual effects, and picture editing so that changes to a film can be made anywhere and at any time

I’ve had a long interest in digital technology from Edit Droid to Sound Droid to Pixar to laser printing — all these tools recycle themselves. All of the things that we are doing will be rewritten once again. I do feel that I pushed digital technology and helped it come into being — now everyone is trying to push the frontier in technology. It will eventually create a more democratic filmmaking environment. Anyone will be able to create movies. Pretty soon you’ll be doing it on your PC.*

*Historicamente, a maior mudança na produção de um filme foi à introdução do som. E isso mexia com todo o processo da filmagem. A filmagem digital é equivalente à introdução só som. Creio que teremos a liberdade de gravar um som, efeito visual e edição de imagem para que as mudanças no filme sejam feitas em qualquer lugar, a qualquer hora.

Eu sempre tive um grande interesse em tecnologia digital de Edit Droid to Sound Droid para a Pixar, para impressão a laser. Todas essas ferramentas se reciclam por si só. Todas as coisas que fazemos serão re-escritas novamente. Eu creio que trouxe a tecnologia digital à tona e ajudei a dar vida a ela. Agora todos estão tentando ultrapassar essa fronteira em tecnologia. Isso vai eventualmente criar uma maior democracia no meio cinematográfico. Qualquer um vai conseguir criar um filme. E daqui a pouquíssimo tempo o farão em seus próprios PCs.
